Certified Dyslexia Testing Specialist
Maura is a native of Lake Charles. She received her B.A. from LSU in speech disorders in 1974. She went on to obtain a Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology in 1976 from the University of Tennessee. She also received a double master M.Ed from Tulane University in 1983 in the fields of Early childhood and learning disabilities. She has maintained ASHA certification since 1977 and is licensed in Louisiana.
Maura moved back to Lake Charles in 1983 and subsequently opened a private practice. She maintained that practice, Mize and Associates Speech, Language and Learning Center until July, 2017 when she joined Hope Therapy Center. She has over 40 years of experience and has worked in acute, NICU, outpatient and rehab settings in hospitals, school-based therapy, home health, and private practice. Through the course of 40 years, she attended multiple conferences on apraxia, myofunctional therapy, Scerts approach for autism spectrum, Prompt, Talk Tools to name few. In 2007, she attended Susan Barton’s graduate level course in California on how to diagnose and test for dyslexia and became a certified dyslexia testing specialist. She began offering evaluations and tutoring for dyslexia (using Susan Barton’s Orion-gillingham based program ) from ages 5 1/2 through adulthood.Maura has also traveled to South Africa, Israel, Cuba and Peru as part of a speech pathology delegation to meet and study with our professional counterparts in these countries.
Maura and her husband Joe have been married for 40 years and have 3 children and 7 grandchildren. They love to travel and spend time with family.
