Frequently Asked Questions

The thirteen questions our front office hears most often before a first appointment, answered plainly: referrals, insurance, what a session actually looks like, and how long care usually takes. If yours is not here, call (337) 478-5880 and we will answer it before you book anything.

01Common Questions

Everything patients ask before their first visit.

Your first visit is an evaluation, not a quick look. Your therapist asks how the problem started, watches how you move or speak or eat, tests what is actually driving it, and then explains the plan and the reasoning behind it. Treatment visits after that mix hands-on work with guided practice, and you spend the visit with your licensed therapist instead of being passed around. Plan on 30 to 60 minutes. We treat children and adults across physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy, so the session is built around the person in the room.

No. Louisiana is a direct access state, so you can start physical therapy with us without a physician referral. If your condition has not shown documented improvement within 30 days, we are required to refer you back to a physician, and we will help arrange that.

Bring a photo ID and your insurance card, a list of the medications you currently take, and any imaging or physician notes you already have. None of it is required in order to be seen, it simply saves time. Wear something you can move in that lets your therapist reach the area being treated: loose pants or athletic shorts for a back, hip or knee problem, a short sleeved top for a neck or shoulder problem. If you are bringing your child, pack whatever keeps them comfortable. If your plan includes aquatic therapy at our Lake Charles location, the front office tells you what to bring for the pool when they confirm the appointment.

Two things help most. Call (337) 478-5880 with your insurance card ahead of time so the front office can verify your benefits before you arrive. Then spend a minute deciding what you actually want back: a full night of sleep, lifting your child again, a meal without choking, being understood at school. Note when the problem started, what makes it worse and what you have already tried. Arrive a few minutes early and finish your intake paperwork with the front office. Nothing needs to be printed at home.

Between 30 and 60 minutes. The exact length depends on the discipline and on what your plan calls for that day, and your therapist tells you what to expect for your own visits at the end of the evaluation. That time is one on one with your therapist, which is what makes it possible to adjust the plan visit by visit instead of repeating the same routine for months.

Yes, and the home program is part of the plan rather than an extra. Your therapist shows you each exercise in person, watches your form and changes it as you progress, so you are never guessing from a generic handout. For a child, the program usually goes to the parent, because twenty minutes at home on a Tuesday night matters as much as the visit itself. Progress between visits is what shortens the overall course of care.

Call (337) 478-5880 or email frontoffice@hopetherapy.co and ask. One phone line covers both locations, and the front office either answers it or has your therapist call you back. Lake Charles is open Monday through Thursday 7:30am to 5:30pm and Friday 8:00am to 12:00pm. Lafayette is open Tuesday through Friday 8:00am to 6:00pm. Nobody should sit on a question for a week out of worry about bothering us.

In most cases yes, though coverage varies by plan, by visit type and by diagnosis. Our front office verifies your specific benefits, deductible and visit limits before your first appointment, so you know what you will owe before you walk in. Call (337) 478-5880 with your insurance card and we will confirm exactly what your plan covers.

A typical course runs two to three visits a week for four to six weeks. That is a starting point rather than a rule: frequency depends on your diagnosis, your goals and what your plan covers, and it usually tapers as you take over more of the work yourself. Your therapist would rather see you the right number of times than the most times, and will say so plainly when it is time to space visits out.

Most people attend two to three visits a week for four to six weeks, and many notice a change within the first few weeks. Your therapist reassesses you regularly and adjusts the plan, so you always know whether it is working.

Yes. You are treated by one of ten licensed clinicians working across physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology and infant and pediatric feeding, so explaining your condition in plain language is part of the visit, not a favor. If a question belongs to another discipline, we walk it down the hall rather than guess at it. And if something needs a physician, we tell you that too.

Say so in the moment. Therapy should ask something of you, but it should not leave you worse than you arrived, and your therapist can change the load, the range or the exercise on the spot. Sore for a day is normal. Sharp, spreading or lasting pain is information we need. If your condition is not showing documented improvement within 30 days, Louisiana requires us to refer you back to a physician, and we help arrange that instead of booking more visits.

Because it is measured, not guessed. Your therapist retests the same things at intervals: range, strength, balance, how clearly you are understood, how you are eating, how you are sleeping. When your goals are met and you can hold those gains with your own program, you are discharged with that program in hand and an open door if anything changes. Nobody here is trying to keep you on the schedule.
