01What It Is

What is speech therapy?

Speech therapy covers far more than pronunciation. A licensed speech-language pathologist evaluates and treats speech sounds, language (both understanding it and using it), social communication, fluency, voice, and the mechanics of chewing and swallowing. Those systems share the same anatomy, which is why the person who can fix a lisp is also the person who can tell you why your toddler still gags on textures.

Speech is the discipline this clinic was built around. Sonya Brooks (MA, CCC-L/SLP, COM®) is the owner and a Certified Orofacial Myologist, and she treats alongside Kristen Marcantel (MS, CCC-L/SLP), Sarah Eccles (MS, CF-SLP) and Taylor Dunn (M.S., CCC-SLP). Taylor holds continuing education in the Sensory Motor Approach to Feeding, in moving nonverbal children toward verbal communication in autism and apraxia, and in orofacial myology. You are matched to the pathologist whose training fits the case, and you keep that same person for the whole plan of care.

What speech therapy is not is a waiting game. A child who is hard to understand at four does not automatically become clear at six, and a stroke survivor who cannot find words does not recover language by avoiding conversation. Progress comes from correct practice, repeated often, at exactly the right level of difficulty. That is what a session is for, and it is why the plan is built around what you or your child can almost do rather than what is already easy.

02Who It's For

Who it's for.

Speech therapy is not only for children who cannot say their R sounds. It is for anyone whose communication or swallowing has stopped keeping up with their life. These are the cases we see most.

01

The child only family can understand

You translate for him at the store and at church. Other kids have started asking what he said, and he has started saying less because of it. We identify which sounds are missing or substituted, then teach each one in a fixed order until it holds up in real conversation. Outcome: a child a stranger can understand, and one who stops going quiet in a group.

02

The child with very few words

He is past two, points at what he wants, and the words are not coming. Autism and childhood apraxia of speech both look like this early on and both respond to targeted work. Taylor Dunn (M.S., CCC-SLP) has continuing education specifically in moving nonverbal children toward verbal communication in autism and apraxia. Outcome: a reliable way to communicate now, and real words built on top of it.

03

The adult after a stroke or diagnosis

The word is right there and it will not come out, or your voice has faded to where people keep asking you to repeat yourself, or food is starting to go down the wrong way. Speech therapy retrains language, voice and the swallow itself. Outcome: safer eating, a voice that carries, and the ability to say what you mean.

03What To Expect

What to expect in a session.

Sessions run 30 to 60 minutes, one on one, in a quiet room rather than a busy open gym. Here is how one goes.

01

The evaluation, and a real speech sample

We start with history: what you are hearing at home, when you first noticed it, what has already been tried, and for children, how the pregnancy, birth, feeding and ear infections went. Then comes formal testing plus something less formal and just as important, a recorded sample of natural talking, because a word list does not show what conversation actually sounds like. You leave the first visit with a diagnosis in plain language and a list of specific targets.

02

Practice, at exactly the right difficulty

The session itself is high repetition disguised well. For a child that means games, books, toys and turns, engineered so the target sound or word comes up dozens of times without it feeling like drill work. For an adult it means structured practice on the words, phrases, voice exercises or swallow strategies that matter to your day. As soon as something becomes easy, we make it harder. Most plans run two to three visits a week for four to six weeks before we reassess.

03

Carryover, because we only get an hour

The rest of the week is where speech actually changes. Parents sit in the session, hear the target, and leave knowing exactly what to model at supper and in the car, usually five focused minutes a day rather than a worksheet packet. We track the target list visit by visit so progress is something you can see written down, and many families notice a difference within the first few weeks.

Good to know

Tell us at the evaluation if your child has had frequent ear infections, fluid in the ears or tubes, and bring any hearing screening results you have. Hearing changes how speech sounds are learned, and it is one of the first things we want ruled out. Some plans ask for a physician referral or prescription before speech therapy even though Louisiana does not require one to start physical therapy. Our front office verifies your specific benefits, deductible and visit limits before your first appointment, so you know what your plan needs and what you will owe.

In Their Words
My little boy started speech therapy at Hope earlier this year and the differences in his speech in such a short amount of time is unbelievable!
